Juvederm Fillers: More than just filling in the gap...

Juvederm is a brand name from Allergen (manufacturer of Botox) for a treatment that involves injecting a substance into the skin to reduce folds and wrinkles. It works by plumping up the skin to "fill out" the lines and wrinkles, leaving a smooth and natural looking effect. Depending on the type of fillers, facial augmentation such as cheek, nose, chin and lip augmentation is also possible.

The main component of Juvederm is Hyaluronic Acid, a naturally occurring substance in human skin that helps repair damaged tissue. It can also bind with collagen, which is the material that supports facial skin, in a way that allows more natural nutrients to flow to the skin.
While hyaluronic acid is naturally a liquid, Juvederm is chemically altered to produce a gel. This means it lasts considerably longer before being metabolized by the body.
Juvederm is suitable for most people with unwanted wrinkles. It may be particularly suitable and effective for people looking to combat the signs of ageing or dealing with the effects of excessive exposure to UV rays. The most popular demand on fillers would be for deep smile lines due to volume loss at the affected area. The filling and lifting effects on the line are quite dramatic and instantaneous. Like Botox, the corrective effects of Juvederm is temporary and the duration is dependent on the type of Juvederm fillers used, either Juvederm Ultra, Ultra Plus or Voluma which all have different usage depending on the area treated and severity of wrinkles. You can expect the fillers lasting from 1 year to 1 year and half before retouch are required.

Juvederm Side Effects

Fortunately, the composition of Juvederm means it is much smoother to inject into the skin than some similar products. There is likely to be some pain and tenderness during the treatment, though this is generally mild. Latest generation of Juvederm contains a small quantity of local anesthetic (lidocaine) for pain reducing.

After the treatment, it is possible there will be some short term swelling or bruising. When this does happen, it generally fades away within a week.

Juvederm is not suitable for people with severe allergies or anaphylaxis. Staff carrying out the treatment should consult with patients to discuss potential risks before going ahead with the procedure.

As with any other medical procedure, Juvederm is only safe when carried out by qualified professional following established practice. Don't be afraid to ask for evidence of the credentials of a clinic you plan on using.
